Design #416 IMS 49

July 1997

At Farr Yacht Design, constant analysis and research are key elements that go into producing  every one of our designs.  Continuous review of IMS rules and information gained from the vast number of successful boats we have previously designed are incorporated into each new high performance racer.

In early 1997, Farr Yacht Design began designing three IMS 49s for separate owners to compete in the July/August 1997 Champagne Mumm Admiral’s Cup.  In addition, two other IMS 49s were designed for racing in other venues.

Design #411 for Jose Cusi of Spain was designed for light to moderate airs and flat water, characteristic of the Mediterranean racing conditions in which the boat will compete.

Design #415 for Bruno Finzi was designed for use as the Italian Admiral’s Cup entry.

Design #416, the USA Admiral’s Cup entry owned by Helmut Jahn.

Design #419, the Australian Admiral’s Cup entry.

Finally, another IMS 49 for Karl Kwok (Design #420) was designed for competition in races such as the Southern Cross Cup, Sydney-Hobart, Air NZ Regatta, Kenwood Cup, Big Boat Series, Key West Race Week and the S.O.R.C.
