Steinlager 2 – The Sailing Legend

The Legendary Maxi-Ketch of Sir Peter Blake

Winner of the Whitbread Round the World 89/90

Big Red is already a sailing legend: no other maxi yacht has this palmares of victories – no other maxi is already a piece of sailing story – and still sailing strong!

Almost 10 million usd were invested in the conception and construction of Steinlager 2. This was the first maxi ketch built of composite materials and the first with a fractional rig.

She has been designed with the sole purpose of achieving the highest speed performance whilst enduring all weather conditions.

In 1990 Steinlager 2 was voted “Yacht of the Year“ by the Yachting Magazine.  A scale model of Steinlager 2 is hanging on the front of the Marine Museum of Auckland.

The winning 2-mast-concept was in the following editions of the Whitbread overtaken by successful yachts like New Zealand Endeavour, La Poste and Merit.

Steinlager 2 is currently being utilized successfully for corporate charters, team building and charter racing in many of the world’s classic ocean race and rally events.
