Whitbread Maxi-Ketch 84' STEINLAGER 2

1989

Steinlager 2 – The Sailing Legend

The Legendary Maxi-Ketch of Sir Peter Blake

Winner of the Whitbread Round the World 89/90

Big Red is already a sailing legend: no other maxi yacht has this palmares of victories – no other maxi is already a piece of sailing story – and still sailing strong!

Almost 10 million usd were invested in the conception and construction of Steinlager 2. This was the first maxi ketch built of composite materials and the first with a fractional rig.

She has been designed with the sole purpose of achieving the highest speed performance whilst enduring all weather conditions.

In 1990 Steinlager 2 was voted “Yacht of the Year“ by the Yachting Magazine.  A scale model of Steinlager 2 is hanging on the front of the Marine Museum of Auckland.

The winning 2-mast-concept was in the following editions of the Whitbread overtaken by successful yachts like New Zealand Endeavour, La Poste and Merit.

Steinlager 2 is currently being utilized successfully for corporate charters, team building and charter racing in many of the world’s classic ocean race and rally events.

Hull/Deck Construction Details:
FRP composite hull and deck with epoxy resin, pre-impregnated carbon fiber and Kevlar skins laid over a PVC foam and Nomex honeycomb core, then placed in an oven and cooked at 75 degrees Celsius.  The internal structure is comprised of FRP carbon fiber reinforces “top-hat” frames and bulkheads with a fabricated aluminum frame absorbing mast and keel loads.

Interior Layout:

The interior is designed for the purpose and intention of offshore, round-the-world racing; it is open, spacious with plenty of storage.  There are 9 hinged bunks per side with storage provided underneath.  Wet-lockers and gear storage are set port and starboard in the main salon along with a rope and equipment locker.  The area forward of the massive main bulkhead, designed to support rig loads, is open and empty for sail storage.  The Nav station is positioned aft on centerline, an aft companionway provides access to the cockpit.  Aft most areas of the boat are also empty; weight concentration has been focused to the center of the boat.

Steinlager 2 offers a voluminous interior, offering the potential for a cruising interior conversion.

Galley:

A large “U” shaped galley is on centerline, forward of the primary companionway.  This proven offshore galley arrangement provides ample storage and working space while focusing the weight over the keel.  The engine and generator are located under the forward portion of the galley cabinet.  This centerline galley provides ample access space port and starboard for moving sails and crew access.

Deck Gear:
The deck layout of Steinlager 2 was designed to be light and efficient. Extensive development resulted in a very clean and versatile configuration saving weight and proving durable in the toughest racing environments.

Winch Package:
The winch package designed by Barient was developed specifically for Steinlager 2 under the direction of the team.  Where possible, single speed winches were utilized to save weight and minimize breakdowns.  Winch maintenance has been an active part of the Steinlager program, reflecting the quality of the hardware.  Electric winches have been added and updated.

Rig & Rigging:

The rig was a custom development by Southern Ocean Spars, one of several built for the Whitbread Race.  It was designed to endure the toughest conditions faced in ocean racing.  Steinlager 2 has completed a thorough re-fit of the rig, rigging and running rigging; replacing and updating nearly all components.
