Farr/SAI Ambrosini Maxi Racing Yacht - 24.32m/80ft - LONGOBARDA
1988
Farr Maxi LONGOBARDA - £800,000 GBP
Longobarda is generally recognized as the outstanding Maxi Racing Yacht of her era, a combination of the design talent of multi-award- winning New Zealander Bruce Farr and the universally-acclaimed build quality of Ambrosini in Italy.
Built in 1988 using state-of-the-art lightweight materials such as carbon fibre, Kevlar and Nomex, and with a no-expense-spared budget, Longobarda was earning an enviable reputation within months of her launch, by taking on - and beating - yachting’s best in races the world over.
Victory in the Maxi Yacht World Championship in 1989 and the OMYA World Cup in 1990 set in train a string of international successes in America, Australia and Europe; in iconic events such as the San Francisco Big Boat Regatta, the Sydney to Hobart and the Isle of Wight Round The Island Race, Longobarda was the boat to beat.
In the 21st Century, Longobarda has taken on a new role: following a major refit, she now offers the unique opportunity for near race-speed fast sailing in an 80ft Maxi Racing Yacht combined with the ultimate in luxury cruising and culinary delights through a series of tailor-made charters in the Caribbean and beyond.
And the ‘grand prix car of the ocean’ is still winning - in January 2008 Longobarda announced her arrival in the region’s waters with victory in the Barbados Round the Island Race in a time of 5 hours 29 minutes, which is awaiting Barbados Yacht Club ratification as a new record for the south-about route.

| Hull/Deck Construction Details: |
Built using state-of-the-art lightweight composite carbon fibre, Kevlar and Nomex, with a no-expense-spared budget, Longobarda was earning an enviable reputation within months of her launch, by taking on - and beating - yachting’s best in races the world over.
Longobarda has 82 feet of open deck space, with ample provision for guests to make the most of the space. Behind the twin helms there is cushioned sunbathing pit with biminii in case the sun becomes too harsh. There are further sunbathing beds available for the more adventurous, who might enjoy taking sun on the foredeck.
There is full awning down the boom, while a cleverly designed bespoke dining table in carbon fibre fits over the grinders, seating four in comfort on either side. |
| Interior Layout: |
Following a major refit in 2007, the interior of the Longobarda has been transformed; fully air-conditioned throughout, it offers a combination of luxury and practicality unlike any other Maxi Racing Yacht.
The spacious saloon is decked out in black and white, with powder blue leather upholstery; 10 people can sit in comfort around two semi-circular carbon fibre tables, and there is a separate fridge, so guests can help themselves to refreshments at any time. The equipment also includes a 42” Panasonic flat screen plasma television and Bose sound system.
The three cabins are themed in blue and white, creating a relaxing ambience: the Master Cabin (forward) has a six-foot double bed and en-suite bathroom, while the Port and Starboard cabins are equipped with bunks and share a bathroom. In addition, the Master Cabin and Port Cabin have a 20” flat screen plasma televisions and sound systems. The on-board lap top computer connects to a KVH satellite system dome. |

Longobarda’s decks are extremely ergonomic and efficient, based around one extensive cockpit. Trimmers sit far enough outboard for good luff vision. The center line of the cockpit is dominated by four grinders allowing eight people to grind simultaneously. Towards the aft end of the cockpit there is a mainsheet traveler and forward of this the mainsail sheet winch with the Navtec hydraulics underneath. Further aft there is a separate grinding pedestal for the two runner winches. |

| Additional Comments: |
Longobarda has seen constant and extensive updates throughout its life. Originally conceived as the most advanced Maxi-Yacht built at the time, Longobarda has transitioned to a fast and comfortable World-Cruising Maxi-Yacht. Still capable of competing and winning in the classic ocean races and rallies, Longobarda is the perfect yacht for an owner looking for race-bred performance and technology with the comforts of a cruising interior and accommodations.
