Open 50 GRYPHON SOLO

1997

Dubbed the world's fastest 50-footer, Gryphon Solo holds the 24 hour speed record for an Open 50, having averaged over 14 knots and covered an astounding 345 miles in 24 hours.  The boat won her class in the 2002/3 Around Alone by a huge margin, as well as winning the 2005 Transat Jacque Vabre, the 2007 Bermuda One-Two,  and taking second in the 2004 Transat Race.  Designed by Group Finot and built without compromise by JMV Industries in France, Gryphon Solo is a thoroughbred racing machine.  The boat is capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots while remaining stable and under control.

Gryphon Solo is built entirely from carbon fiber- including all spars, keel fin, daggerboards and rudders- with Nomex core in the hull above the waterline and in the deck.  The boat employs a push-button, hydraulically-operated canting keel, large, asymmetric daggerboards, as well as a fore-and-aft water ballast system, which allows for infinite trim options and great all-around performance, although clearly reaching is her specialty.  The combination of a voluminous sail plan, broad beam, and light displacement gives the boat tremendous power and acceleration. In addition, the yacht sports the latest high-tech electronics and communications equipment, allowing the boat to be easily and safely sailed by either a solo skipper or a full crew.

Gryphon Solo has benefited from many improvements and a professional maintenance program, including a new hydraulic keel system, new optimized asymmetrical daggerboards, a third-generation sail development program with Doyle Sailmakers resulting in a far more efficient sail plan, new standing and running rigging, new electronics and auto-pilots, new fully faired bottom, with new paint  on the bottom, topsides and deck and many more items.

This boat is race-ready and must be sailed to fully appreciate, so we encourage inquiries regarding sale or charter.

"The boat is fast - no question - particularly in reaching conditions. The fact that it holds the 24-hour speed record for the class is no accident." TIM KENT - Around Alone veteran
