Open 50 GRYPHON SOLO

1997

Dubbed the world's fastest 50-footer, Gryphon Solo holds the 24 hour speed record for an Open 50, having averaged over 14 knots and covered an astounding 345 miles in 24 hours.  The boat won her class in the 2002/3 Around Alone by a huge margin, as well as winning the 2005 Transat Jacque Vabre, the 2007 Bermuda One-Two,  and taking second in the 2004 Transat Race.  Designed by Group Finot and built without compromise by JMV Industries in France, Gryphon Solo is a thoroughbred racing machine.  The boat is capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots while remaining stable and under control.

Gryphon Solo is built entirely from carbon fiber- including all spars, keel fin, daggerboards and rudders- with Nomex core in the hull above the waterline and in the deck.  The boat employs a push-button, hydraulically-operated canting keel, large, asymmetric daggerboards, as well as a fore-and-aft water ballast system, which allows for infinite trim options and great all-around performance, although clearly reaching is her specialty.  The combination of a voluminous sail plan, broad beam, and light displacement gives the boat tremendous power and acceleration. In addition, the yacht sports the latest high-tech electronics and communications equipment, allowing the boat to be easily and safely sailed by either a solo skipper or a full crew.

Gryphon Solo has benefited from many improvements and a professional maintenance program, including a new hydraulic keel system, new optimized asymmetrical daggerboards, a third-generation sail development program with Doyle Sailmakers resulting in a far more efficient sail plan, new standing and running rigging, new electronics and auto-pilots, new fully faired bottom, with new paint  on the bottom, topsides and deck and many more items.

This boat is race-ready and must be sailed to fully appreciate, so we encourage inquiries regarding sale or charter.

"The boat is fast - no question - particularly in reaching conditions. The fact that it holds the 24-hour speed record for the class is no accident." TIM KENT - Around Alone veteran

Now, having completed filming of the movie “The Life and Death of Charlie St. Cloud”  this starlet Open 50 is back on the market.

Hull/Deck Construction Details:

Carbon fiber and nomex core sandwich composite construction. The hull is moderate in its proportions with high freeboard at the bow to prevent the boat from digging its bow in when surfing the waves of the Southern Ocean. The hull is pre-impregnated carbon cooked at 120° Celsius with the bottom in monolithic construction with longitudinal ribs for re-enforcement. The topsides and deck are carbon nomex sandwich. The hull remains well balanced with heel and is designed to be easily driven by autopilot.

The keel is canted with 2 large hydraulic rams. In normal conditions, the maximum cant angle of the keel is 40°. Water ballasts particularly at the stern complete the stability of the boat, in order to provide better stability while reaching.

Interior Layout:

Working from the transom forward, the lazarette is a watertight compartment that houses the auto pilots and rudder posts.  The floor of the lazarette serves as the top of the water ballast tanks, which is split in the middle into a port and starboard tank, each measuring approx. 2’ high by 7’ long by 5’ wide and holding __ gallons of sea water, weighing ___ when full.  These tanks are mainly used for power reaching and running in heavy air.  A watertight bulkhead with hatch separates the lazarette from the next compartment forward, which contains a storage area under the cockpit, where the pedestal winch system gearing is located.  On the port side we carry plastic watertight storage boxes with spare parts and on the starboard side there is a pipe berth-style  bunk.

Moving into the main cabin, the nav station is the dominant feature, with a large “nav berth” just aft of the chart table which also serves as the engine box and has a removable top for access to the engine.  There are two large comfortable berths all the way outboard to port and starboard, adjustable to heel angle with block and tackle, and each bunk has three large zippered pockets beneath them where we store food and other miscellaneous gear.  There is a Hella fan at the head of each bunk for hot weather conditions.  There is a one burner gas stove on the port side of the main cabin bulkhead, facing aft and a sink on the starboard side, with shelves for kitchen utensils, condiments etc above.  At the forward end of the main living compartment on centerline is the keel box, which is a watertight box that houses the top of the canting keel.  The keel is controlled by two horizontally opposed hydraulic rams, which are mounted between two carbon posts on each side of the keel box and push/pull the keel head athwartships through the “wet” keel box that allows the keel to cant though the opening in the hull.  There are storage areas on either side of the keel box where we store bottled water to keep the weight low and centered, and emergency gear is hung in watertight bags from the ceiling for easy access.

There is a massive solid carbon watertight bulkhead just forward of the keel box which takes the load of both the keel and mast, with a hatch though it to the sail locker on the port side.  As you enter the sail locker looking forward, the daggerboard trunks are to either side, all of solid carbon laminate, which serves to reinforce the mast/keel bulkhead.  On the centerline of the compartment are the two forward water ballast tanks, which are about 2’ high by 2’ wide by 10’ long and carry ___ gallons of salt water weighing ___ pounds.  These tanks are mainly used in upwind conditions in choppy sea conditions to prevent the relatively flat forefoot from pounding.  Sails can be stacked in this compartment to either side for trim purposes.  There are two more watertight bulkheads  forward of the sail compartment that are completely empty and are designed as “crash” bulkheads to prevent the boat from sinking as a result of a head-on collision.

Deck Gear:

Starting at the bow, the bowsprit extends 6’ past the stem and has a vectran bobstay and pad-eye with block for the A-sail tack line.  The main headstay is at the stem and goes to the masthead- it is made of Kevlar, with a light pvc cover for UV and pro-furl furler integrated into it.  The luff of the genoa, ’the Solent’ wraps around the headstay and is lashed and zippered.  The sail is lashed top and bottom so is permanently installed.  Same with staysail.  The next stay back is the “staysail stay”, which is on a block and tackle arrangement which can be brought back to the mast to allow the Solent to tack through more easily.  The staysail is a versatile sail that is flown between 20 and 50 knots of true wind. The last stay is for the storm trysail, which is also removable.

Winch Package:
New pedestal drive system for the primaries.

2 - Harken 55 for the primaries

2 - Anderson  for the runners

1 - Anderson for the main sheet

Rig & Rigging:

The mast, boom and spreaders are all carbon.  The two spreaders are supported by rod rigging and the mast is deck stepped, with rig tension achieved through a hydraulic pump.  Three sets of running backstays/checkstays support the mast for and aft, which are led to a winch in the cockpit.  All halyards, reef lines, sheets etc. are all led to the cockpit for ease of handling short-handed, except for the spin halyard, which is a two-part deal that goes to an Anderson winch mounted on the mast .  The jibs sheets both go through a floating titanium ring which can be adjusted in three dimensions from the cockpit.

The Code Zero is non-overlapping and sheets through the rings, while the kite sheets are led all the way aft though turning blocks at the transom.  All running rigging is by MovStar, which is a sponsor.
