SailrScience

Physics and fleet analytics in our consulting toolkit.

Why we adopted it

Almost daily a client asks what a change would do: cut the jib down, add crew weight, change a sail. We used to answer with our VPP and our judgment. We still do — and now we can answer faster, and show the client the number on their own certificate.

What it does for clients

Configuration Review

Certificate Consultations

Bring us your ORC certificate and the question behind it. We model the change against the boat as certified and report it as a performance change against your own certificate polar, in seconds per mile — read alongside our VPP and our judgment.

SailEdge Edge Map: a sail change read in seconds per mile across a matrix of wind angles and wind speeds

Fleet Analysis

Cohort Studies

We place the boat among its measured peers: the cohort it races against, the design family it belongs to, the conditions that suit it or do not. The study shows where the boat stands and what the fleet record suggests about the choices in front of you.

The comparison we reviewed

Before we put the tools in front of clients, SailrScience compared them against our own VPP on our Farr 40 One Design across eight configuration changes, and we reviewed the results.

“Almost daily, we get requests from clients to help optimize and improve their boat's performance. Questions like 'What happens to performance if I cut down my jib or change my crew weight?' are common. SailrScience is bringing a new level of data science to assessing the impact of configuration changes, allowing us to answer these questions for our clients more efficiently. The physics underlying the SailrScience models are based on widely used, well-validated algorithms — but the proof is in the details. In a detailed study of our Farr 40 One Design, looking at eight configuration changes, SailrScience's evaluations consistently matched our proprietary in-house models. The SailrScience toolkit is now an exciting new addition to our consulting offerings.”

The line in our footer means SailrScience tools sit in our consulting toolkit beside our own VPP. Where we use them, the deliverable is ours; the engine is theirs.
