Designer’s Notes

The commission, from a Californian client, was for a yacht of around 48 ft, built to a strict budget, that would provide him with fast, comfortable and enjoyable cruising and racing for his family, and day outings with large groups of friends with little or no yachting experience. The yacht was to be raced under PHRF, and notwithstanding the restrictions imposed by the foregoing requirements, was to be as competitive as possible racing under the IOR Rule on San Francisco Bay and West Coast downwind racing. The sail plan is of sufficient size to allow the self-tacking headsail to be suitable for all but very light conditions whilst cruising. By reefing the mainsail in strong winds, this yacht is able to cruise in 5 to 35 knots of wind without sail changes. The interior features a huge main saloon and galley area to accommodate a large social gathering and sufficient berths and large locker volume for extended cruising with the owner's family. The hull shape is broad enough aft to allow a private stateroom on the port side alongside and forward of the cockpit. Owner of SANGVIND reports "She goes like a bandit, in fact better than a bandit, and she's much easier to handle than I thought possible".
