Description
The SW 110 is the fifth design from Farr Yacht Design for Southern Wind Shipyard. The basis for the concept of the SW 110 can be found in the hugely successful SW 100, collaboratively designed by Farr Yacht Design, Nauta Design and Southern Wind. Southern Wind came to us in 2006 with a desire for a larger yacht of similar layout but incorporating additional volume for a tender garage and more spacious cabins for the owner, guests and crew. The target for performance was an increase in light wind in step with the increase in size with no reduction in the sailing stability in moderate and strong winds. The design brief also specified a complete updating of the hull style to reflect the advancements in technical hull design as well as the latest trends in stem rake and stern shape.

Designer’s Notes
The SW 110 is the fifth design from Farr Yacht Design for Southern Wind Shipyard. The basis for the concept of the SW 110 can be found in the hugely successful SW 100, collaboratively designed by Farr Yacht Design, Nauta Design and Southern Wind. Southern Wind came to us in 2006 with a desire for a larger yacht of similar layout but incorporating additional volume for a tender garage and more spacious cabins for the owner, guests and crew. The target for performance was an increase in light wind in step with the increase in size with no reduction in the sailing stability in moderate and strong winds. The design brief also specified a complete updating of the hull style to reflect the advancements in technical hull design as well as the latest trends in stem rake and stern shape.
We took the opportunity to produce a thoroughly advanced hull shape, drawing heavily on our Volvo 70 and Open 60 research programs, with a more upright and narrower stem and a wide stern with a tighter bilge radius. The wide aft sections maximize effective sailing length at high speeds without adversely affecting handling. The waterlines are straighter in the bow and the diagonals aft have minimal curvature. Southern Wind has matched the hull shape to a lightweight structure. With a lightship displacement of only 83 tons the design goal of boat speed at least 0.7 knots greater than the SW 100 in light winds has been efficiently achieved with a moderate increase in rig size over the SW 100.
The greater size of the SW 110 permits the addition of an owner’s dressing area, a third crew cabin and the aforementioned tender garage to go with the basic layout of the SW 100. Nauta Design has produced a stunning interior with an open, airy saloon combined with a cozy lounging area and a smartly flowing galley and adjacent crew cabins.
The excited commentary of the owner and crew after the delivery voyage from Cape Town to the Med revealed a genuine enthusiasm for the overall performance and handling of the SW 110. She had exceeded their expectations and was exhilarating to sail. The exceptional handling and performance can be attributed to the thoughtful design of the appendages and the rigorous analysis and subsequent careful placement of the rig to achieve a precise balance between the aero and hydrodynamic forces.
